South Padre Island is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,422 at the 2000 census. Climate

South Padre Island experiences a humid subtropical climate, similar to that of the Tampa Bay Area of Florida but with less precipitation and slightly higher summer maximum temperatures. The average high in January is 19°C (67°F) and the average low is 11°C (52°F). The average high in July is 35°C (95°F), and the average low is 25°C (77°F). The warm season is long, as average high temperatures are 32-37°C (90-99°F), and average low temperatures typically around 25°C (77°F).

The water conditions


You can kite on the ocean or on the lagoon. The laguna madre is miles and miles of waist to neck deep water. On the ocean you can enjoy the nice waves that hit the Gulf of Mexico. The avarage water temperature is 18-23°C. click for larger version


The wind conditions


The thermal wind blows all year round from the southeast. June and july are the best month of the year. click for larger version



Facilities


There are some kiteboarding schools on South Padre Island. Some have their own rescue boats. click for larger version


Downwinder and trip possibilites


You can practise you tricks or learn the basics on the Laguna Madre. In the Gulf of Mexico are plenty of endless downwinder opportunities, just take a taxi back. click for larger version
